Basic Life Support | Overview

The AHA’s BLS Course provides the foundation for saving lives from cardiac arrest. It teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support, with a focus on high-quality CPR and team dynamics.

Course Content

  • New science from the most current AHA guidelines update for CPR and ECC
  • The components of high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
  • The AHA Chain of Survival for prehospital and in-facility providers
  • Important early use of an AED
  • Effective ventilations using a barrier device
  • Importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR
  • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants

Additional information

  • Certification is currently obtained using Heartcode BLS.
  • We now offer advanced providers the ability to renew their BLS certification with their advanced certification and it is recommended that you align your BLS certification with your advanced certification.
  • Please contact your department CPR/BLS instructor for a list of dates if you need certification.
  • For those individuals who do not have a department CPR/BLS instructor, please contact the Life Support Office at 617-355-2649.
  • The LSP hosts CPR classes twice a month on the third Thursday of the month in Waltham (9 Hope Ave.) and the fourth Tuesday of the month in Boston (1 Autumn St.). Space is limited and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • $80/person: Boston Children's employees, BC/TS Affiliates
  • $90/person: all other participants
