Collecting Race, Ethnicity, Language, and Education Level from Patients and Families
At Boston Children’s Hospital, we are committed to providing our patients the best health care. Getting to know the background and preferences of our patients helps us deliver high quality care.
We collect language, education, and background information from all of our patients and their families to make sure we provide the best care possible. Looking at trends in patient care over time helps us identify areas for improvement and work on those areas.
Any personal information you share with us is confidential and protected by law. The people who see this information are registration and clinical staff, hospital administrators, teams involved in quality improvement, and people interested in improving the health of children.
We will use your child’s information, along with hundreds of all of our patients, to measure our performance and ensure we provide all of our patients the highest quality care.
Your child will receive the same quality of care whether or not you choose to share information about their race, ethnicity, and language with us.
No. We collect this information from all of our patients and their families to help improve the care that we provide. All information about our patients is private and confidential.
We do not want to make assumptions about race or ethnicity based on how someone looks. We are asking you this question to make sure we enter the correct information.
You can choose all of the races that apply to your child.
Usually American is considered a nationality rather than an ethnicity. We are asking about how you describe your child’s background or heritage. You may select as many groups as apply to your child. Feel free to include information on your child’s ethnic background and heritage in addition to their nationality.
Nearly all hospitals collect this information.
Some diseases and conditions occur more often among certain racial or ethnic groups. Knowing your child’s race and ethnicity may help us diagnose these conditions more quickly and begin their treatment sooner.
Collecting this information also helps us monitor how well we serve patients. If you have any additional questions, your child’s doctor, care team, or provider would be happy to talk with you more.

Our partnerships
We are proud to be the primary teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, and our Nursing Department partners with 27 schools of nursing throughout Massachusetts and New England.
Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, an integrated pediatric hematology and oncology program through Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital, provides – in one specialized program. We also maintain close working relationships with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and many other are hospitals in caring for our patients.
